Another painting out of the ordinary. I went back and forth on whether I should add color, but a part of me likes this painting just the way it is -- simple, kind of fun. I especially am happy with the toad and the buried chipmunk. When I was selling produce to the food co-ops, I grew a variety of garlic known as German Stiffneck, which is depicted in the painting.
Garlic is 48 x 24, on a gallery canvas.

I was in St. John's, Newfoundland last year. St. John's is about as far east as you can go in North America and it is way up there in latitude. A beautiful land of rock, fisherman, whales, and icebergs. Beginning in 1954, the Canadian government resettled, controversially, thousands of citizens who lived in isolated communities. Some families actually pulled their homes across the frozen bays. This painting is based on a number of photographs I saw in a museum in St. John's. Please see the "Detail" of this painting as well.
