It may seem like things are out of control, what with Covid, billionaires frolicking in space, whales looking for clean oceans, homelessness, and fires and drought. But 2021 is not much different than any other time in human history. There has always been viruses, misspending, and destruction, as well as hope. We shall get through this. I've been a fan of Georges Rouault for some time. Georges Rouault was a French artist whose work melded Fauvism and Expressionism with its jewel-like tones and bold graphic lines. During Covid, whiling away the time, I watched reruns of old 1960s sitcoms and westerns. Of course, one of those shows was That Girl, starring Marlo Thomas with her huge eyes and vintage 60s hair flip. So here is my Rouault-inspired That Girl/Marlo Thomas.  20 x 16, acrylic, gel, pumice.

In a world turned upside down for humankind, a mermaid attempts to take the coronavirus away. Meanwhile, nature looks on in a detached and dispassionate manner.

Like my previous painting Pulling a House Across the Ice in Newfoundland, this painting touches on the same subject of what an event and trauma it must have been to move a house across the ice, sometime for many many miles.
